The Songbird Coven was founded in 2023 by Sam Davs out of a clear and persistent truth: too many talented songwriters were not being given the platforms, rooms, or listening spaces they deserved.
The Songbird Coven (Originally named The Country Coven) is a songwriter showcase dedicated to amplifying women, gender-diverse and allies voices in independent music. Through intimate songwriter rounds and collaborative programming, The Songbird Coven creates a platform where songwriters can share their original music, build meaningful connections, and engage with audiences.
Its first official show took place during CCMA Week in Hamilton, debuting to a sold-out room and immediately establishing the Coven as a powerful new listening-room experience. From there, a series of pop-up songwriter nights followed across the GTA, each one building momentum and deepening its sense of community and purpose.
In March 2025, the project was officially reimagined and rebranded in Ottawa, Ontario as The Songbird Coven, with co-host and vital creative force Rox Anne joining to help shape its next chapter. Together, Sam Davs and Rox Anne anchored the Coven into a monthly gathering rooted in collaboration, care, and community, elevating it into a consistent home for original music and storytelling.
We have partnered with organizations including All Woman Music, Steeltown Songwriter Series, The Country Music Association of Ontario and hosted a private songwriter session at Folk Music Ontario in 2025, expanding opportunities for artists to connect across regional music communities.
The Songbird Coven has produced 11 shows in 2025 alone, hosting 45+ artists and songwriters from more than 24 cities. Audience engagement continues to grow, with several events (including August and October 2025 and January 2026) reaching full capacity with standing-room-only attendance.
The Songbird Coven strengthens the storyteller ecosystem while increasing visibility and opportunity for underrepresented songwriters. By creating welcoming spaces for artists and audiences to gather, the Coven is building a more inclusive and collaborative future for many genres of music.
Songs are not just performed, but revealed, held in real time between artist and audience.
